Forget the Dance Central "celebrity" debacle; Microsoft is doing celebrity tie-ins right with its new Kinect Sports promotion, in which sporting legends face off with 2012 Olympic challengers to see who's best.

Professional athletes including Graeme Swann, Amy Williams and Darius Knight will be competing in the Kinect Sports Superstars event on 14th April, attempting to secure gold medals and sporting glory.

After the big event, on 23rd April at 6pm the same athletes will kick-off a Guinness World Record attempt over Xbox Live, aiming to take part in the largest 100m sprint ever.

If you're an Xbox Free member and are concerned you won't be able to take part, don't worry: from Thursday 21st to Monday 25th April, Xbox Live Gold is free to everyone, letting all members take part in Video Kinect, online play and more over the Easter weekend.

LONDON – 7 APRIL – Some of the UK’s biggest sports legends and 2012 hopefuls are set to face-off in a friendly competition for bragging rights and gold medals at the Kinect Sports Superstars event on the 14th April. Captains Graeme Swann (cricket) and Amy Williams (skeleton) will lead their teams, with Louis Smith (gymnastics) and Darius Knight (table tennis), to sporting glory as they compete against one another on beach volleyball, boxing, table tennis and track and field on Kinect Sports – all for the thrill of sport.

Kinect Sports, a recent BAFTA Best Family Game award winner from Rare Ltd., turns any living room into a world-class stadium, football pitch or track-and-field arena. Simple, intuitive and instantly fun, the Kinect for Xbox 360 exclusive title is the first full-body, controller-free sports game. It delivers the ultimate party experience with six different individual and team-based events: track and field, football, beach volleyball, boxing, table tennis and bowling. Physically compete with friends in the same living room and over Xbox LIVE – no matter your athletic skills. Just kick, spike, run and jump your way to sporting glory.

In addition to the bespoke event, the Kinect Sports superstars will be issuing a call to action to athletes of all ages to make history on Saturday 23rd April. On this day at 18:00pm, sprinters from the UK and worldwide can represent their nation by taking part in the largest 100m sprint Guinness World Record attempt on Xbox LIVE and Kinect Sports. Compare your fastest time to that of Graeme, Amy, Louis and Darius – and see if you can set your own 100m dash world record.

The history-making moment is taking place during ‘Xbox Nations’, when all Xbox LIVE members can access the service for free for the entire Easter weekend. Xbox will be awarding prizes and unlocking Gold member benefits and a world of movies, music, multiplayer gaming and more on Xbox LIVE from Thursday 21 April to Monday 25 April. Transform your living room into a cinema, listen to the latest hot music, or Video Chat with Kinect, for the entire family to enjoy together.
