Bad times

Despite the success of Kinect Sports, UK developer Rare is suffering from a round of redundancies in the studio's art department, according to Games Industry.biz.

The exact number and nature of the redundancies isn't known, but a spokesperson for the company had this to say:

I can confirm that a small number of employees in the art department of Rare Studios have been informed that their roles are at risk of redundancy. While redundancies are never easy, these organisational changes are part of Rare's ongoing strategy and operational planning which typically coincides with the shipment of a title. We are working closely with the affected employees to support them through this transition and help them apply for other roles within Microsoft.

Last year, Rare spoke of its big plans for Kinect, plans we hope are not in jeopardy due to these redundancies.

Meh, whatever. I care very little for anything bad happening to Rare. They fell from greatness and were totally dead to me when they became Microsoft owned. They can go out of business completely for all I care. They haven't even really made anything very notable since they were affiliated with Microsoft....

As well as the whole Avatar thing, plus I quite enjoyed Viva Pinata (though the DS version is the best one!)

What is a "redundancy"? Is it like a "layoff"? I'm a computer geek and redundancies are a good thing from a computer standpoint.
