Next step: sentience
The Kinect SDK is due this spring, and judging by what Microsoft's research arm has already achieved with the device, the world of Kinect hacks is about to get a lot more interesting.
The video below shows Kinect used in all kinds of useful ways, including alerting the visually-impaired to potential dangers, helping wheelchair users to navigate and assisting in the navigation of the universe, all completely hands-free. It's impressive stuff and is surely the tip of the Kinect iceberg.

As impressive as it may be it still means nothing to the average joe who bought kinect...we all bought it for 1 reason only...games...and sadly games seems to be low on the list of things kinect is good for!

I think the game direction was just a way into the mass market. If only a small percentage of the new uses for the kinect sensor are picked up we are in for an exciting time. Take away the interface and let everyone play.
