Sega's Virtua Tennis 4 Takes Kinect to Court in 2011

Sensor's second serving of tennis

We've already seen tennis come to Kinect in the underwhelming Deca Sports Freedom, but Sega is hopefully set to show how it's done by bringing its flagship sporting series over with Virtua Tennis 4 later this year.

Playable with either Kinect or the Xbox 360 controller, the game will feature a completely new single player World Tour mode, with decisions made on and off the court making or breaking careers. While in matches, a new Match Momentum gauge will allow players to build pressure, increasing in ability as their players gain confidence through playing successful shots.

Quite how the game will manage to create a winning tennis experience with nothing in your hand is yet to be seen, but with the original Virtua Tennis team heading up development it'll certainly be interesting to see the results. Virtua Tennis 4 will hit Kinect later this year.

I can understand swinging at the ball without a peripheral, but how will they manage controlling your player around the court with Kinect? I realize some movement will be required, but it seems like a lot of ground would need to be covered, could get bumpy (literally) with 2 players.

If its anything like tennis on the Wii we wont be doing the running! But this is great news I love this series and its about time we got news of a big game release after the tiger woods disapointment. I just hope the full game is kinect enabled not just some sort of mini game.

Tennis is ideal for Kinect and should work pretty well. All the ball serving should work fine, as should the racket. Running will probably just require you to step forward / back / side, and the on screen player will run automatically forward.

I think it would be easy to have the kinect let you control everything from running to one side of the pitch and swinging the racket. If any of you have played table tennis on the kinect sports that can demonstrate on a smaller scale the fact that you have to run from side to side to follow the returned ball and swing. Really does depend on how well the game will use the whole 3d playable space and then scale your movements for on the court.

I play table tennis on sports sometimes but i find it very unreliable and unresponsive compared to some of the sports games? You can swing along time before or after the right time and still hit it and sometimes backhands are animated as forehands and vice versa. It just doesn't feel "right" but the boxing is the same its a long way off 1:1 movement. If sega can improve on it i think itll be great!
